About 85% of the people in the U.S. with celiac disease remain undiagnosed. So far, it was believed that there is a fairly substantial population of undiagnosed celiac people world-wide. In other words, the spate of new celiacs diagnosed was really due to increased awareness & testing, so it was believed. However, a recent study by Mayo Clinic gastroenterologists has found that there has actually been a sharp increase in the occurrence of celiac disease compared with 60 years ago.
