So far, it was believed that there is a fairly substantial population of undiagnosed celiac people world-wide. In other words, the spate of new celiacs diagnosed was really due to increased awareness & testing, so it was believed. However, a recent study by Mayo Clinic gastroenterologists has found that there has actually been a sharp increase in the occurrence of celiac disease compared with 60 years ago. (Be sure to check out the video of the findings in this post.)

This most recent study by Mayo Clinic, however, has found that celiac disease is actually on the rise compared with 50 years ago. The research team from Mayo Clinic tested for celiac about 10,000 blood samples taken between 1948 – 1954 at a Wyoming Air Force base, & compared these with 12,000 samples taken recently from Minnesota. The ages of the tested people were comparable in both samples. The Mayo team found that the recent samples had far more incidence of celiac than the ones from the 1950s.
